First grade here I come! What are the top ten skills needed for success?
The next grade level is right around the corner. With these digital learning days, the kindergarten team has put a list of the top ten things your child needs to master for success in first grade.
Math
1. Counting to 100 by ones, tens, and starting from any number.
2. Shapes. Practice naming shapes, describing shapes, and where shapes are located. How many sides? Is it flat or solid? Where is it? Use the words above, below, beside, next to, in front of, and behind. 3. Add and Subtract within 10. Here are some fun games!

Reading
6. Independently read 3 letter words like cat, rug, tin, pop, bed.
7. Identifies 2 words that rhyme AND can come up with rhyming words independently. 8. Quickly names letters and says the correct sounds. |
Writing
10. Writes stories, how-to books, and opinion pieces.
- Stories - birthdays, exciting events, or daily activities.
- How-to Books - Students can write books about how to play their favorite game, making their favorite food, or home routines like brushing their teeth.
- Opinion Pieces - What is their favorite food? Favorite animal? Favorite game? Favorite toy?
