RAinbow Words
Your child will be learning many things this year including how to read. A large part of learning to read is being fluent in sight words; these are the words that appear most frequently in books.
Our Kindergarten team has a fun system to teach and review sight words that we have been using now for many years. We call it Rainbow Words. The words are organized into colored sets and increase in difficulty. Every 7 weeks we will focus on a different color group and celebrate when students master each list.
Your child should be successful in learning all of their words by the end of the year with practice and your help. We will provide you with the word lists and strategies for practice at home. Students must be able to read the words automatically, in both isolation and within text. In addition, they must be able to read the words without sounding them out. This is not simply memorizing the word order of the lists. You must mix them up when you play and practice at home.
Below are the words and the dates scheduled for our color celebrations. All children are allowed to attend the party to celebrate any words learned but they must know all words in the color group to receive the necklace and certificate. If your child does not master a particular list by the predetermined date, we will continue to work with them and they can get their reward at the next party. We are providing these dates at the beginning of the year so that you can encourage and support your child as they work towards these academic goals. If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.
