Activities for home:
- Practice your address. Be sure to point out to your child what your road name is, and mail box numbers. Tell them when you leave the city of Marietta or the state of Georgia.
- Tell your family stories! Do you have any family members that will be honored on Memorial Day? Will you be celebrating Independence Day?
- Visit the Marietta National Cemetery during Memorial Day Weekend. Every grave has a flag placed on it by a scout.
- Visit the post office and talk about how mail is sent through it.

- Look for national symbols and presidents on money.
- Take your family to the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Park in Atlanta.
- Family dinner time is a great time to talk about the positive character traits covered this quarter. Bring up tales of family members (good and bad) and stories from your childhood. Children love to hear family stories!
Quarter 2
Fun Things to do at Home
- Describe Christopher Columbus and why he is remembered (Columbus Day).
- Explain why rules should be followed.
- Continue to show an understanding of positive character traits exhibited by citizens.
- Compare similarities and differences of life today to life in the time of Christopher Columbus.
- Recognize who Veterans are and why we celebrate them on Veterans Day.
- Identify the bald eagle as an American Symbol.
- Explain positive character traits of veterans.
- Learn how American culture celebrates Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day and how others celebrate in their cultures.
- Students will be introduced to historical events and figures within a given holiday.
- Students will learn about needs and wants/goods and services.
Fun Things to do at Home
- Allow your child to earn money at home when they exhibit positive character traits, help with chores or follow rules. At the end of the month help them count their money and take them to the Dollar Store. Help them choose something within their budget.

Fun things to do at home
- Talk about the kinds of work people in your family do. If your family celebrates Labor Day include your child in on the planning of the celebration.
- Make a list of your family rules and talk about the importance of these rules.
- Many students today have no idea of the concept of currency since the use of cards for payment is so prevalent. This would be a good time for your child to earn some coins or dollars for the completion of chores. They could save for a trip to the Dollar Store or save for the school book fair later this fall.
- Help your child make a map of their room, their home or neighborhood.
